Mother’s Day - In Europe

In Europe the spread of Christianity absorbed the ancient tradition into a celebration to honour the "Mother Church" which represented the spiritual power that protected and nurtured them. This developed into the time when people who had travelled away from the place of their birth would go home to visit their "Mother Church" and hence meet with their families.

This was "Mothering Sunday". It was particularly appropriate for domestic servants and apprentices.

Over time the religious aspect of the celebration has diminished and the family side increased. The day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent
