Traditional games and activities The preponderance of apples in these traditional activities derives from the influence of the Roman Goddess Pomona whose festival coincided with the Celtic New Year and whose symbol is the apple. Pumpkins: To ward off evil spirits and Jack o Lantern. Bobbing for apples: Represents the bounty of the Roman Goddess Pomona and her favour on those who can get the apples. Dressing up: To scare away the spirits who are abroad on All Hallows Eve. History

Trick or Treat: Modern representation of the tradition of Soulling on All Souls Day. Hazel Nuts: Girls placed hazel nuts in front of a fire, one for each of her suitors. She then sings 'If you love me, pop and fly; if you hate me, burn and die.' And the first one to "pop and fly" is her true love. Slicing apples: Across the centre (across the core) shows the five point star. Eat it by candlelight in front of a mirror and youll see the face of your future spouse over your shoulder in the mirror. Peeling apples: Peel an apple so the skin comes off in one long strand then throw it over your right shoulder. The shape it lands in will be the initial of your true love. |
