Birthday Cakes and Candles
Although these things are always vague and open to discussion, it has been suggested that the origins of the Birthday cake is Ancient Greek when cakes were one form of devotion brought to the Temple of Artemis.

Another option is that it originated in Germany where they baked the Geburtstagorten which was a sweet cake baked with layers.

In Clare Gibson's Ultimate Birthday Book, the author suggests that putting candles on the birthday cake may come from the same Greek tradition as the cake itself when candles would be put on the cake to make it stand out.
