Death to routine! The fourth year of marriage is traditionally celebrated with linen and Ireland is the perfect choice for an anniversary getaway. Not only the home of linen manufacture it is easily accessible and still has some areas that are remote, romantic and exclusive.

Sligo means “abounding with shells” and it is a small county in the West of Ireland. It lays claim to an Atlantic coastline from Mullaghmore to Enniscrone with wild untouched beaches. Towering over the county is Benbulben hill and although Sligo is drenched in history and is perfect for walking, climbing, fishing, beachcombing and surfing it has remained remarkably undiscovered. The Irish poet William Butler Yeats is synonymous with Sligo and the romantic combination of poetry, privacy and castles make this county our favourite pick for a fourth anniversary getaway.

Sligo town started with the building of a castle and an abbey and still retains some of its medieval layout. From a cemetery that outdates the pyramids to The Metal man of Rosses Point who has actively aided navigation since 1821, there is no shortage of significant sites to visit. There are various museums commemorating Yeats as well as a Model Arts Centre where contemporary exhibitions run next to paintings by his brother Jack.

Consider booking into Markree Castle where the Cooper family has lived for the last 350 years. During its restoration and conversion to a hotel much care was taken to preserve the authentic spirit of this building. They want you to feel as if the Castle belongs only to you every night of your stay. During the day you can try your hand at clay pigeon shooting and archery.
