It is traditional to present your loved one with a gift of cotton on
your second anniversary. England is the home of spun cotton with the first
cotton reels operating from 1730 but if you would like to really congratulate
each other for finding grounds for marriage – look further afield.
The pursuit of a cotton rich destination will have you choosing between
east and west.
East
Cotton plants like warmth and the largest producers in the East are Uzbekistan,
the People’s Republic of China, Pakistan and India. While the first
three destinations might offer slightly more excitement than one would
want from a quixotic holiday India specializes in perfect romantic getaways.
From luxury trains to a truly impressive list of palaces, spoiling yourself
is simply a matter of making a decision. The Taj Mahal is said to be the
most perfect architectural structure in the world – as a monument
of love it also rates pretty high on the list of anniversary destinations.
You need to spend at least one full day in Agra to appreciate its beauty
– try to plan your trip to coincide with the full moon so you can
witness the effect of its rays on the marble and jewels. The Indian Himalayas
are a secret. While tourists flock to Tibet in droves much of the Indian
side of the mountain was forbidden to foreign visitors until quite recently
and it remains pristine. An unforgettable holiday will wind through remote
villages with spectacular scenery, take in ancient monasteries and give
you an insiders view of traditional Himalayan culture.
West
Cotton is still the leading cash crop in the United States – but
this dry economic fact does not mean that there is no romance to be found
chasing Cotton. There are no fewer than 17 states that you could officially
visit if cotton is your excuse: California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas,
Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Florida,
Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and Kansas
While each of these states has their own romantic attraction there is
an old world charm about Georgia that will suit a nostalgic celebration.
Cumberland Island is separated from the mainland by salt marsh, river
and sound and only reachable by boat. This barrier island has a wild forest
complete with wild horses, raccoons and live oaks. Wood storks, fiddler
crabs, storks, loggerhead turtles and oyster catchers share a 17 mile
beach. There is only one hotel, The Greyfield Inn which only has radio
phone communication with the mainland…making this a truly exclusive
anniversary treat.
