Ancestry in UK, USA etc.

An ancestor is a parent or a parent of an ancestor – or more understandably: parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, great-great-grandparent, great-great-great-grandparent, great-great-great-great-grandparent, great-great-great-great-great-grandparent, and so on, ad infinitum.

In building family trees we’re interested in finding people with common ancestry. Now, bearing in mind that every person as 21 parents (2), 22 grandparents (4), 23 great-grandparents (8), 24 great-great-grandparents (16), and so on, then even if you get to a number as small as 232 (over 4 billion) which is 32 generations or a little over 600 years, you find a number greater than the total number of people alive at that time. (And a couple of generations further back the number goes past the total number of humans that have ever existed.)

It means that everyone is related because they have common ancestors, and also that you will have the same ancestors through different genetic lines. In fact DNA evidence indicates that during the last major ice age the human population dropped to about 250,000. So we’re all descended from that small group.

However records don’t go back that far.
