Coats of ArmsIn the European tradition a coat of arms (or armorial bearings) is a specific design which belongs to and represents a person or group of people (usually a noble or royal family but also includes groups of professionals, or other institutions). The origins of Coats of Arms is among the noble houses of Europe where the combatants wanted to identify themselves, partly to know who was on whose side, but mostly so that you could identify the person you wanted to fight. The art of designing, displaying, describing, and recording arms is called heraldry and has a specific textual description system. In the modern era Arms are still in use and, as they represent various institutions, they are effectively and actually trademarks and as such their use is protected legally.
