Genealogy / family history

Genealogy (from the Greek genea meaning "family"; and logos which means "knowledge") is the study of familial relationships. It is more than just putting names on a tree. It involves identifying family connections through the use of records that provide physical and legal relationships.

Together the available information from both written and oral sources can be combined to construct either a genealogy or a family history. The difference is that the former describes “family trees” while the latter goes into more detail with actual events related to the lives of the individuals concerned: a detailed family tree can prompt questions that create the family history.
